ACCESSIBLE WORLD AND ISSUES FACING PERSONS WHO ARE BLIND PRESENT ORIENTATION AND MOBILITY-PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE Hosted on Sunday, June 19, 2011

How does it feel to travel today using either a white cane or a guide dog?
For those who learned O&M skills over 30 years ago, do you feel that the
skills you learned continue to make you feel confident when traveling? For
those of you who have had O&M in the last five to ten years, has traveling
become any different today than when you first learned? If you feel that
there have been differences in your ability to travel, to what do you owe
those concerns?

Accessibleworld Presents Parenting Issues Facing Persons Who Are Blind Hosted on Sunday, March 13, 2011

Children can be our greatest joy. Through early childhood and those teenage years beyond, how we relate to each other changes. Some parents and children sail through the early years but find the junior high and high school time particularly difficult. That relationship in which your child shared his daily activities. Troubles with a friend, or last night’s exciting dream is gone too soon. In his place, you have a teenager who sounds like the son or daughter you love but whose actions and choices bear no resemblance to the person you use to know.

Accessibleworld Presents Dating And Marriage On Issues Facing Persons Who Are Blind Hosted on Sunday, February 13, 2011

“What is the percentage of blind people married to sighted people?” my friend Velma asked just yesterday.
“I really don’t know.” I said.

Lovely though it is to have a friendship in which this question can be raised so easily, I realize there is much about dating and marriage among the blind that would make for valuable discussion. That is what we will be talking about during our next get together of Issues Facing Persons Who Are Blind.

Accessibleworld Presents Connecting Socially WithPersons who are sighted On the Next Issues Facing Persons Who Are Blind Hosted on Sunday, January 09, 2011

It is so easy for us to talk with others who are blind. Often, many of the same interests are shared. For many, finding a place of our own in which we feel we can contribute with sighted people is difficult. The lack of sight or limited vision on our part becomes an almost insurmountable barrier neither side seems able to get beyond. We try everything to put those with vision at ease. Humor doesn’t work; honesty fails to break down the barrier. We long for a place of acceptance and inclusion that will go beyond the evening of which we are a part. We want to contribute and become friends.

Accessible World presents the Issues Facing Persons who are Blind Discussing Transportation Hosted on Sunday, December 05, 2010

During our next meeting of Issues Facing Persons Who Are Blind, we will discuss a subject frustrating to many of us. Whether you travel through the use of Paratransit, bus, cab, train, paid or volunteer driver, it is a subject of endless discussion and one fraught with difficulty. Wonderful and helpful as it is to have a system in place which allows us freedom to travel, routes are rearranged, and rules for whether or not eligibility is possible for a prospective participant are not a guarantee.

Accessible World presents The Job Search on Issues Facing Persons who are Blind Hosted on Sunday, November 07, 2010

Ken Metz has spent over 30 years as a personnel Director and employee in the work force. His vast and varied exsperience is just what is needed to lead our discussion during the next telephonic conference of Issues Facing Persons Who Are Blind. Under optimum circumstances, work is filled with stress. Concerned with advancement and competition from other employees, it is sometimes difficult to know just where we stand. A person with visual impairment may need training or assistance other employees do not. How much should we ask for? Must we do 150 per cent while sighted workers do far less?
