SPOTLIGHT ON MUSIC PRESENTS MAUREEN SCHULZ, MY VIEWS ON FOLK MUSIC Hosted on Saturday, May 12, 2012 |
As the subject of folk music is so wide ranging, I want to talk about folk music from my personal point of view.-- I grew up with it in the 70s, where I heard British folk mostly.-- I will give some examples of songs that tell stories, songs that live on harmony, also perhaps of the transition to more varied instruments.-- From there we'll go back and touch on American folk music, which of course had its time of popularity in the 60s, and we'll look at the beginnings of folk music in the states with the labor movement in the 30s.-- Is folk music alive and well today? |

SPOTLIGHT ON MUSIC PRESENTS MIKE GORMAN, HIT OF THE WEEK Hosted on Saturday, April 14, 2012 |
Have you heard about Hit of the Week? Mike Gorman will introduce us to these amazing records, originally distributed on Durim, a form of cardboard. It was the early 1930s when money was scarce. Another interesting fact about them—they were pressed with music only on one side. In addition to the United States, they were also a hit in Europe. People collected them, to have a complete set of the records. Popular artists of the time who recorded for Hit of the Week Records include Gene Austin, Duke Ellington (as Harlem Hot Chocolates), Eddie Cantor, Morton Downey and Rudy Vallee. |
